Dear Minister Jessie Sunner,
Congratulations on your recent appointment as Minister of Post-Secondary Education and Future Skills.
I hope this letter finds you well. I am the President of the Langara Faculty Association, and I am writing on behalf of the Faculty Association Board of Directors to respectfully request a meeting with you at your earliest convenience.
We would like to discuss several important matters, particularly the recent developments that have led to a crisis of job losses and program cuts at our college and throughout the post-secondary sector. I believe that a direct conversation would provide valuable insights and facilitate progress on key issues that concern us both.
We strongly support the Federation of Post-Secondary Educators of BC (FPSE) position statement dated November 14, 2024, which states that these cuts will undermine the quality of post-secondary education in BC and reduce access to education across the province unless the government takes decisive action. We urge you to take immediate steps to save jobs and support the survival of colleges in BC. While we understand that the significant cuts to international enrollments will inevitably result in some job loss, we are concerned about the speed and depth of the impact of these cuts on the long-term viability and quality of our educational institutions. We believe effective support for the system as it endures this shock will ensure it does not simply survive, but can revitalize and improve. I look forward to discussing this with you.
Please let me know your availability for a meeting in the coming weeks. I am happy to accommodate your schedule and can meet in person or virtually, whichever is most convenient for you.
I look forward to hearing from you soon to arrange a meeting. You can reach me at pgreavesaylward@yourlfa.ca or 604-354-5797.
Sincerely,
Dr. Pauline Greaves
President,
Langara Faculty Association
